Hi there, I'm really keen on this Bokashi business. I tipped my 1st bucket of fermented waste into a large pot and covered it in soil, as suggested on your website. Came back to it after 2 weeks to mix it up, add more soil and plant a pumpkin on top. Found maggots in the food waste! I know this is a bad sign if found in the bokashi bin itself during fermentation, but what about weeks later? I've gone ahead with my plan to plant a pumpkin on top, hoping the maggots aren't a disaster at this stage. I think some of the pieces of food waste may have been a bit too big, possibly not fermenting completely in the 2 weeks I'd left the bokashi bin alone before pouring out. This might explain it? Any advice, particularly of the "don't worry it'll be ok" variety, gratefully received. Bx
Im suprised that the maggots are still alive actually being under the soil - I expect the flies laid there eggs before the food went into the Bokashi bin
eugh, they must be fast, but I guess that's what they do!
Thanks for the "it'll be ok".
I saw several maggots evacuating the pot out of the drainage holes, so you're right about them not wanting to be in there. I didn't realise they wouldn't choose to be under the soil, see how ignorant we are of processes that go on all around us until we start engaging!
