Hi. I live in a flat with no access to the outside. I've turned a bedroom into a growing area for plants. I grow wheatgrass trays every week, lots of herbs, trays of lettuce, buckwheat & sunflower sprouts etc. I would really love to have a wormery to both save buying quite so much compost all the time and also to use up all the scraps left over, particularly after juicing. Is there any reason I can't keep one indoors? Does anyone have any experience with is. Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.
The trouble is, having read everyone's posts about worms escaping, I'm now getting a bit paranoid about them getting loose in the flat. I'm very fond ow worms but don't fancy them all over the carpet, I'm not at all sure what the cat would make of them, nor guests who will be sleeping in the bedroom on the odd occasion.
worms escape in the 1st week of moving into their new home - or when the conditions aren't to their liking
the 1st week you can put a bin liner over the wormery to collect any strays If they leave after that then its a possibility that you are overfeeding / too wet, too dry
I got my worms about 2 weeks ago ... it was still fairly chilly and I decided to keep them indoors till it warms up a tad ... or they get used to Slithery Towers. They are, seemingly happy enough ... no escapees at all and they are wriggling away like nobody's business when I have a look. I've given them a few scraps yesterday for the first time ...
It is still chilly and so won't be in a hurry to put them out yet.
Thanks - this has really cheered me up. My daughter's coming up for a visit and has freaked at the thought of sleeping in a room with worms. So, once she's gone, i'll look to get a wormery.
did you take any special precautions to keep them from escaping?
